We also provide 24/7 emergency services to stop water damage from any type of weather event: tornado, ice storm, or lightning strike. When a storm hits, remember Gray’s and call us immediately for quick dry-in, and followup permanent repair.

We understand the flashing requirements for roof penetrations and parapets, the scupper and roof drain installations, skylight installations, gutters or other water removal systems; all the things that must be correct for your roof to function as the water and weather protection you need.

The main types of non-residential roofs are flat and metal roofs. Metal roofs can be standing seam, overlapping metal panels, or metal sections designed to look like other materials such as shingle, shake, tile, or slate.

Flat roofs are typically roofed with some type of membrane including:

Built-Up Roofs

Built up roofs, or BURs, are applied in layers of roofing felt and tar. The tar is applied hot and allowed to set between applications. BURs were the only type of flat roof application for many years. Gravel is frequently used as ballast. These roofs are heavy and require specific structural dead load calculations. Built-up roofs are very long lasting and can be easily repaired over the life of the roof.

Modified Bitumen

Modified Bitumen roofs provide many of the advantages of BURs, but are easier to install and not as heavy. The roofing comes in rolls of asphalt with fiberglass or polyester reinforcing. This is usually fully adhered and heat sealed. Modified bitumen can be single ply or double ply.

Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer (EPDM) roofing is also called rubber roofing. Large sheets of EPDM are fabricated and installed either fully adhered or mechanically fastened. There are a number of advantages including heat resistance, hail resistance, high wind resistance, and high resistance to weathering. It is relatively easy to install and can be light in color to help with energy efficiency.

Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) roofs are the most recent of the membrane roofs. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) has been in use since the 1970s. Both are single ply membranes and can be installed either fully adhered or mechanically fastened using metal battens. Both can have heat welded seams and both are “cool” roofs.
